Why I always Choose Public Transport in Switzerland
Switzerland has one of the best public transport systems in the world. Trains, buses, boats, and cable cars connect almost every village, mountain, and lake- and they run with impressive precision.
Here's why so many travelers (including me) prefer it over driving.
1. The Views: Unbeatable Scenic Views
Some of the most beautiful landscapes in Switzerland are best seen from a train or boat window. You can relax and actually enjoy the mountains, lakes, and valleys instead focusing on the road.
My tip: The journey itself becomes part of the experience- especially on routes like the Glacier Express, Bernina Express, or simple regional trains through the Alps.
2. The Reliability: Always on Time.
Swiss public transport is famous for being punctual. Trains and buses connect smoothly, and delays are rare compared to most countries.
My tip: You can confidently plan tight connections. The system is designed so everything works together.
3. The Reach: You Can Get Almost Anywhere
From big cities to tiny mountain villages, the network is incredibly dense. Trains, PostBuses, boats, and cable cars cover the country thoroughly.
My tip: Even remote trailheads are often reachable by public transport- which is perfect for hiking itineraries.
4. The Ticket (Swiss Travel Pass): One Ticket Covers Almost Everything
With a Swiss Travel Pass (or Half Fare Card), you can ride trains, buses, boats, and many mountain transport options without buying individual tickets every time
Seat Rerservations & 1st vs 2nd Class
Do I need a seat reservation?
On most regular Swiss trains- no. You can simply board and sit in your class.
Reservations are required or strongly recommended only on certain scenic trains such as the Glacier Express, Bernina Express, and some panoramic routes. Even with a Swiss Travel Pass, you still pay a small reservation fee for these trains. You can book them easily in the SBB Mobile app
1st Class vs 2nd Class
For the majority of my hiking itineraries, 2nd class is perfectly fine. The trains. are clean and comfortable either way. Choose 1st class if you're taking a scenic journey or simply want more space and quiet.
